Our partners, Banjara Camps, focus on off-beat destinations and provide quality living experiences in remote parts of
the state of Himachal
Pradesh. Shoja is one such gem where their property overlooks a dense coniferous forest spread across the valley. The cloudy weather never really displayed the entire landscape in its finest while we were there, but the exposure to pahari village life made the trip special. We visited a village mela (festival) where the pahari (mountain) folk dance, make merry and mingle. The following day, our neighbours celebrated the homecoming of the village deity with a feast for their friends and family. The ladies of the village prepared rotis (Indian bread) for over six hours, while the men prepared the vegetable dishes. The meat of four goats was also a part of the festive spirit.
A walk to the ruins of the nearby Raghupur fort is a must for the expansive views of the valley and the meadows. Another hike is to a lake with a temple, through thick forests. Our visit coincided with an impromptu musical gathering, at a chai (tea) stop, by locals visiting the temple to seek the blessings of the local presiding deity. The transient exposure to the pahari lifestyle was a special highlight of our trip.
