Mahatma Gandhi said "be the change you want to see the world". We believe involved travel can be a powerful instrument to connect with local customs, traditions and also a vehicle to share and learn. Mainstream travel is now detached from native cultures of the world. Tourists fly into enclaves of tourist spots, spend time pursuing leisure activities, and board the flight back home. It
 is not to say one shouldn't do that, but where is the balance?
Soulitudes is associated with a development organization, Association for India's Development
(AID -
www.aidindia.org), which is involved in an integrated development program across the country, particularly in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Bihar.
AID also acts as a funding agency for grassroots program across the country. The Mumbai branch of AID recently funded a middle-school in a beautiful, scenic but impoverished region in Western India (6 hours from Mumbai). The region is endowed with valleys, backwaters, lush green coconut groves and abundant natural beauty. Interested individuals or groups can teach students in the school as well as explore the Konkan region of Western India.
Opportunities to be a part of the AID movement in other parts of India are also possible. |
