| Advait Utsav |
 |
|
Venue: Churhat Kothi
Samay (time): October 30th 2004
Gayak (singer): Uday Bhawalkar
Advait Utsav was a Churhat Kothi & Soulitudes presentation to evoke the primordial sound Nada Brahman, which has been the source from which our classical musical traditions have manifested. Indian civilization, since its inception, has evolved through seers, sages and mystics who dwelled on understanding the ultimate reality or Truth. Few seers have explored it through metaphysics, several through music. Adi Shankara, great Sufi saints, Sant Thyiagaraja, and Kabir delivered
their messages through the medium of lyrical verses and its musical renditions, thereby raising the consciousness of the land we now know as India. The essence of our traditional music is thus immersed in the spiritual quest for Truth and aims to understand the Ultimate, through raga vidya (knowledge of ragas). From the earliest times, the notes or swaras that adorn the raga like a necklace have evolved from the sounds of nature and have inspired musicians for generations.
Till the mid 20th century, our music reached out to its patrons in a personal accessible fashion. The performances were in the form of baithaks (intimate musical gatherings) in natural or personal settings. We wanted to capture the spirit of the days where musicians were not confined by time or numbed by closed spaces and detached from nature. To integrate the three expressions of our being – bhakti (devotion), music and nature in one harmony,
was the aim of the festival.
Uday Bhawalkar, a famous exponent of the Hindustani classical music style, Dhrupad,
(www.dhrupad.com)
had been invited for the inaugural concert on October 30th 2004, at Churhat Kothi in Bandhavgarh.
Pricing
The gathering was restricted to the residents of Churhat Kothi and select invitees. Churhat Kothi has only 12 tents set among 40 acres. Along with the concert on the 30th, residents

was held on a non-profit basis and the objective of the pricing
was to recover costs of running the camp and travel costs of the artists.
The price was Rs 5,000 per couple, per day. This included accommodation, all meals, safari rides into the park, elephant rides, park entry fees and an invitation to Advait
Utsav.
